Check Valve (NRV) for One-Way Fire-Water Flow

A check valve, also called a non-return valve or NRV, is designed to permit flow in one direction and close when the flow attempts to reverse. Its action is automatic, using the movement and pressure of water rather than a manual handwheel.

For coordinated project supply, contact AJ Safety Solutions, compare the available fire valve range, and review compatible fire pipe network components.

How Non-Return Action Works

During forward flow, the internal disc or closing element moves away from its seat. If the differential pressure reverses, the element returns toward the seat and restricts reverse flow. The exact closing mechanism can differ between swing, lift, silent, dual-plate, and other check-valve designs.

Key Functional Features

  • Automatic operation without a manual operating handle.
  • Provides a defined forward-flow direction through the valve body.
  • The internal element closes in response to reverse-flow conditions.
  • Can support directional control within a compatible water-based network.

Typical Applications

Check valves may be installed on pump discharge lines, risers, supply branches, tanks, and other locations where the approved system design requires one-way flow. Correct orientation and adequate access for inspection are important parts of the installation layout.

Project Specification Notes

Body style, disc arrangement, installation orientation, end connection, nominal size, pressure rating, material, head-loss characteristics, and required approvals are specific to the selected model. This product record does not invent those values. The valve should be matched to the hydraulic calculation and approved technical submittal.

Standards and Maintenance References

System designers may consult NFPA 14 for standpipe and hose system requirements and NFPA 25 for ongoing inspection, testing, and maintenance. Always follow the locally adopted code and manufacturer’s instructions.
